After a night without sleep (who needs sleep anyway), I powered my way through a few cups of coffee, popped 2 more painkillers without relief, I decided to start making calls. I was starting to think maybe it was a little worse than I thought or maybe it was simply that I am getting old. I called my previous surgeon and he was on vacation. I found out that the University of Utah had an Orthopedic Insta Care. Since my primary care provider is with the U, I figured I would swing through the clinic before we headed back to Kanab, which is about a 4 1/2-5 hour drive. Again, I had a great experience. I had a sports medicine doctor look at my knee, x-rays were taken and he ordered an MRI. I planned to have my MRI in Saint George when I returned home. The doctor did give me stronger painkillers, for which I was thankful. I was still on crutches, but the brace I had from the day before was too painful to wear, so I went without it.
A little over 2 hours into our drive home, I received a call from the doctor asking us to turn around and come back. Still not really understanding the severity of the situation and the amount of pain I was experiencing, I just wanted to go home. He then informed me of my injury. I had no idea what it was, or how bad it was. Evidently, the trauma orthopedic saw my x-ray and diagnosed my knee- Displaced Tibial Plateau Fracture. They made an appointment for a CT on Monday and Surgery on Tuesday in Salt Lake City (ugh another 4 hour drive). I spent the weekend searching the internet for information. The swelling was unreal, going all the way to my toes.
